How to Clean Jewelry

Routine home care of fine jewelry combined with regular inspections by a professional jeweler is essential to maintaining its beauty and allowing for a lifetime of enjoyment. For daily home care and cleaning, we recommend using professional jewelry cleaners and polishing cloths formulated especially for cleaning jewelry. Our chart below can help identify which of our trade-secret formularies is best suited to each piece in a jewelry wardrobe.

Note: Use extreme caution when using in-home sonic or ultrasonic machines, as they can cause stones to loosen or fall from their settings.

Annual Inspection

While the products we sell at The Kingswood Company are for routine, at-home cleaning of jewelry, we also recognize that professional care and cleaning is equally important to keeping jewelry sparkling for a lifetime. All pieces of fine jewelry should be taken to a jeweler annually for an inspection.

Most jewelers will provide an annual inspection at no cost as part of a purchase agreement. While a very thorough professional cleaning is a nice perk of taking a piece in for inspection, the important elements of the inspection are less visible. A jeweler will examine the piece with a jeweler’s loupe, a special magnifier through which she will look for loose stones, structural damage or damaged prongs. If any weaknesses are identified, they can be repaired. Many insurers also require that any piece that is insured be inspected to keep coverage current.
